New
Signing Andy
Howat has signed from Junior East Super League champions Bonnyrigg
Rose. Andy previously played in the East of Scotland League with
Edinburgh University before moving to Cowdenbeath in the SFL. The 24
year old who also played at Berwick Rangers will be familiar with a
few of the faces at training as in his younger days he played in the
same City Under 19s team as Kenny Ross, Kevin Morrison and Dougie Gair. The
striker is a welcome edition to the squad for Saturday's league match
against Coldstream at the stadium.

Shaun
Resigns as City Manager Following
the defeat against Tynecastle at the weekend the City manager Shaun
Steven resigned. The
club have issued the following statement.
Shaun
Steven has advised the committee of Edinburgh City F.C. of his
resignation as manager of the club, a decision we have accepted with
regret. Over the past 6 ½ years, initially as assistant manager
to his brother Tom and then as manager himself, Shaun has contributed
enormously to the development of the team and of the club as a whole.
This has been reflected in the club appearing in several East of
Scotland and Qualifying cup finals, progress in the Scottish Cup and
of course a Premier Division championship. All of us at the club offer
Shaun our thanks and best wishes for the future.

Chairman.

City
Rue Missed Opportunity as Montrose Progress Montrose
scored two goals late on to clinch their place in the Fifth Round of
the Active Nation Scottish Cup at Easter Road next month. City started
the game brightly but it wasn't long before the league side started to
assert their authority on the game forcing a number of corners in the
first 15 minutes although City defended them without too many
problems. A fierce volley from 25 yards out had Duncan Monteith
scrambling to his right to palm it round the post. Montrose eventually
took the lead when a long kick from keeper McNeil was flicked on to
Nicholas who shot on the turn from 20 yards out beating Monteith low
to his right. At
this stage of the game things didn't look great for City, but goals
change games as they say and when Danny Denholm (one of four 19 year
olds in the starting line up) broke
down the left the large crowd were on their feet. He didn't
disappoint playing a perfectly weighted pass into Dougie Gair's path.
Dougie as we know likes a Scottish Cup goal and he made no mistake
from 10 yards out shooting low under the advancing McNeil. The
remainder of the half saw the young City side grow in confidence and
they took the game to the Angus side without creating too many clear
cut chances. City
started the second half well but for all the good lead up play the
decision making in the final third saw a number of fine positions
fizzle out without threatening the Montrose goal. Denholm, Caddow and
Gair all had opportunities but failed to sneak the goal that the neat
build up play deserved. It was somewhat against the general run of
play when Montrose took the lead with 20 minutes remaining. The goal
was avoidable from a City perspective as Maitland's late run into box
allowed him to head the ball beyond Monteith's outstretched arm into
the back of the net. City
had introduced Steven Clee who wasn't long on the pitch when he was
hauled down near the halfway line by the experienced Tweed who
recognised the danger as the Montrose rearguard looked exposed having
pushed high up the
pitch. Perhaps something the City defence could learn from. Instead they allowed
Nicol to run the length of the pitch to score uncontested. The
youngster did very well but you can't help think an "a la
Tweed" challenge near the halfway line would have halted him in
his tracks. That
goal ended the City challenge and we were left to rue our inability to
capitalise on the period of domination either side of half time when a
goal could well have swung the tie our way. So it
is Montrose who can look forward to the glamour tie against Hibs in
the next round and who would begrudge their players or fans. Both have
endured a torrid season for the most part. We will be playing Preston
Athletic at the stadium when Montrose take on Hibs in the last
sixteen.
The cheers from Easter Road that day will have a little more
resonance than usual for the City diehards.

Hibs
Carrot for City and Montrose
The
draw for fifth round of the Active Nation Scottish Cup has thrown up a
potential derby for City. The winner of our fourth round tie with
Montrose will be away to Hibernian. If the team needed any extra
incentive to beat Montrose then the draw could not have
been much better. The same goes for Montrose of course who will also
relish the chance to pit their wits against SPL opposition, in
particular player/manager Steven Tweed and goalkeeper Andrew McNeil as
both played at Hibs. It adds a little something to the fourth round
tie between City and Montrose which after being postponed on Saturday
is scheduled for Wednesday night.
Active

Forfar or St Johnstone v Dundee United
Hibernian v Edinburgh City or Montrose

It would seem a formality, but stranger things have happened, although

Spartans
Debacle Brings City Back Down to Earth with a Thud
City
who were struggling with injuries started in an unfamiliar 3-5-2
formation as Ross MacNamara and Kenny Ross joined the long term
injuries, Ross Guthrie and Jamie Bain on the sidelines.
Spartans
took the initiative in the first half dominating possession, finding
space
which they used particularly well in the wide areas. They created a
number of chances with Keith McLeod missing a couple of free headers
while a King chip came back off the post. City managed to create a few
chances, Michael Bruce
and Steven Clee both missing good opportunities, but it was Spartans
who took the lead on the stroke of half time, Archibald
scoring from close in. City abandoned the experimental formation at
half time reverting to a standard 4-4-2 and for the first 20 mins of
the second half we had the lion's share of the possession without
creating many clear cut chances.
It
was somewhat against the run of play when Ross Archibald fired in
Spartans second from the edge of the box, and the third arrived soon
after with Kader lobbing Duncan Monteith from an acute angle. City
completely capitulated thereafter shipping goals at an alarming rate -
somewhere in between Bruce was sent off for a second bookable
offence - all in all a very bad day at the office (0-7).

Ross
Guthrie Out Until New Year City
youngster Ross Guthrie (pictured) will sit out the next month or two
after suffering a reoccurrence of a previous problem. His knee injury is
caused by 'growing pains' and
has proved troublesome for the striker in the past, keeping him out of
football for some time. Even at this stage he would do very well to be
ready for the Cup game against Montrose in January.
Ross
joins a growing list of injuries. Jamie Bain sat out Saturday's
victory over Keith and will seek treatment on his injured ankle this
week now the swelling has gone.
Added
to the list after the cup game are defenders Kenny Ross, Shaun
Harrison and captain Ross Macnamara. A number of the U-19 squad are on
standby for the game against Spartans at Ainslie Park this weekend
with the first team squad stretched to the limit.
Saturday's
game will kick-off at 2pm, 15 minutes later than originally scheduled.

Up in Scottish - Montrose at The Stadium
By
the time City's
name was drawn out of the hat (a big bowl really) at Hampden this
afternoon the potential for a glamour tie had gone. Instead of the
dream pairing with Hibs or Hearts we were drawn to play Third Division
Montrose at home in the fourth roun d
of this season's Active Nation Scottish Cup. No disrespect to the
Gable Endies, but it isn't the glamour tie some had in mind.
Nonetheless it is still a cracking match for us all to look forward
to.
It
gives our management team and their very youthful squad a chance to
pit their wits against seasoned professionals. How will we stack up
against our more illustrious opponents when the two meet next year,
who knows? Montrose won't relish the trip to the stadium and there
will be added pressure as this is one of the few ties they could have
drawn where they will be burdened with the favourites tag.
Both
teams can go into the game knowing that they are one result away from
a place in the last 16 of the Active Nation Scottish Cup. The match is
scheduled for 9th January 2010 with a 3pm k.o.
Active

Youth
Development the Key
As
City await the fourth round draw tomorrow it is perhaps time to
reflect on past glories and the youth teams that are the foundation of
this current side.
Back
in 1986 when former chairman Alan Day approached the social club about
reforming Edinburgh City FC it is doubtful that he would have expected
the club to have come so far. At that time City had one adult team who
were living a fairly nomadic existence at various venues around
Edinburgh. In 1996 the big breakthrough came when City managed to
secure the use of Meadowbank Stadium and with that gained entry into
the Scottish Qualifying Cup. In 1998 we made it through to the
Scottish Cup knocking East Stiringshire out in the second round,
before losing at Premier Division Dunfermline. With that the profile
of the club was raised and soon after we started running youth teams
under the Edinburgh City banner.
At
the time the stated aim of the club was to try to promote from within
where possible, giving players the opportunity to play in games like
yesterday's. It
is testament to the sterling work carried out within the club's youth
division that of yesterday's squad of sixteen, eleven were graduates
from or are still part of the City youth set-up. It is unlikely that
many, if any of the clubs competing in this year's competition will be
able to lay claim to such a high number of homegrown players in their squad.
The
pipeline looks good - Scottish Cup wins at different age groups in
recent years and with around 500 players playing in Edinburgh City
colours at all levels each weekend we have one of the biggest and
best youth set-ups in the area. A fact recognised recently by
the Scottish Football Association when they awarded the club with the
SFA Quality Mark.
City
tends not to be a club that shouts from the rooftops about our
successes, instead quiet satisfaction is very much the City way.
However
this weekend everyone associated with the club deserves a big pat on
the back as we look forward to the draw at Hampden tomorrow.

Fantastic
Effort Sees City Progress to the last 32
City
are through to the fourth round of the Active Nation Scottish Cup
after an epic match against Keith. It was a great team effort
although no doubt Dougie Gair and Duncan Monteith will take the
plaudits in the press for their outstanding performances. In the end
the difference between the sides was in front of goal, Keith were
wasteful in contrast to a City side who had a clinical edge to
their game.
The
visitors were the more confident looking of the two sides in the early
stages and Kenny Ross did well to clear a net bound header off the
line in the opening ten minutes. City started to come more into the
game and the visiting keeper did well to push a Steven Clee header
onto the bar. The opening goal arrived in the 19th minute when Gair
burst down the inside left channel and fired the ball across the goal,
the unfortunate Nichol sliced it into the net. City began to play
some nice football and scored a very well worked goal on 24 minutes
when a Ross Macnamara pass released Jordan Caddow through on goal.
With the keeper closing him down Caddow cooly passed the ball sideways
for Gair who slotted home from 10 yards. It was a game that ebbed and
flowed from one end to the other and Keith enjoyed a spell of pressure
at the end of the first half but could not find a way past a resolute
City defence. For every attempt on goal there was a City body in the
way to snuff out the danger.
The
second half started as the first had ended with a couple of chances
for the visitors which had one of them found the net would have surely
changed the complexion of the game but as it was it was City who
extended their lead in the 70th minute again Caddow and Gair combining
well to good effect. Caddow broke in from the right wing and crossed
for the on-rushing Gair who made no mistake from 12 yards out. Duncan
Monteith pulled off a number of great saves before he was beaten in
the 91st minute when substitute Harris got a consolation goal for the
Highlanders.
City
now await with bated breath Monday afternoon's fourth round draw at
Hampden.

Up
for the Cup?
City
and Keith will fight it out for a place in Monday's fourth round draw
at Meadowbank tomorrow. Keith made it this stage by beating Dalbeattie
Star (4-2) and then Vale of Leithen (3-1) both away from home,
tomorrow's trip will be their shortest journey time yet.
City
won both of their games 5-1 beating Coldstream in the first round at
Home Park and followed up by beating Burntisland Shipyard at
Meadowbank. Jamie Bain who injured his ankle last week will be missing
as will Alan Mackintosh. Under 19 goalkeeper Danny MacKenzie makes the
step up to provide cover.

Cruel
Challenge Cup Defeat for City
Edinburgh
rivals Spartans progressed to the quarter finals of the South
Challenge Cup at the expense of a valiant City team. The home side
scored the winning goal three minutes into injury time as Keith McLeod
completed a brace for the second time against City this season.
In
an absolutely pulsating game that was a great advert for East of
Scotland football City opened the brighter and it was no surprise when
Jordan Caddow scored from close in following a great run and cross
down the inside left channel by Dougie Gair. City's lead did not last
long as Ross Archibald fell in the box and the referee seemed to be alone in seeing a trip, but the penalty was duly awarded and slotted
home by McLeod.
Indeed
refereeing decisions were to play a major part in this game, the
referee failed to spot a blatant shirt tug/block on Kenny Ross as he
burst into the box in the first half and the crowd (both sides) were
stunned when he disallowed a Danny Denholm goal early in the second
half for what seemed like an impossible offside. City had out-passed
the home side in the
first half but Spartans were coming into the game more in the second
and hit the woodwork three times as they pressed forward. City continued to threaten with Denholm, Steven Clee and Shaun
Harrison all going close.
Jamie
Bain picked up an ankle injury late on which makes him a big doubt for
next week's game against Keith. Jamie's injury and the result put a dampener
on
the day but City can be proud of their efforts in a high tempo game
that was a great workout for both clubs as they prepare for the Third
Round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

Spartans
Test for City in Challenge Cup
The
kick-off for Saturday's South Challenge Cup tie at Spartans has been
moved to 2.30pm. Both clubs originally agreed to a 3pm start unaware
of a League ruling stating that matches should kick-off no later than
2.30pm.
The
game marks City's first visit to Ainslie Park where we will be hoping
to continue our excellent away form. Not only have City won every away
game this season we also have a 100% record in Cup matches this term.
No pressure then!

City
Through to Semi-Final of Image Printers City
continued their great cup form making it seven out of seven cup wins
this season with a victory over Heriot Watt University at the stadium
today. Michael Bruce returned to the heart of defence and Ross
Macnamara played at right back after four weeks on the sidelines.
Kevin Morrison moved to central midfield in a 4-5-1 formation with
striker Ross Guthrie taking a place on the bench.
The
game was a much tighter affair than the last encounter with the
University creating the best of the few opportunities in the first
half. Duncan Monteith saved a powerful header on the line and watched
helplessly as a free kick struck the bar. The pivotal moment of the
game came midway through the second half when Dougie Gair chased down
a long ball through the middle nicking in between defender and
goalkeeper to lob home from the edge of the box. City reverted to the
more familiar 4-4-2 formation shortly afterwards as Guthrie replaced
Macnamara and began to look more dangerous creating two or three
more good chances although Gair's goal was enough in the end.
City
will be away to Gretna 2008 in the semi-final who saw off Craigroyston
after extra time at Raydale this afternoon.

Will
It Be Another Case of Grand Lars-eny? On
their last visit to the stadium on league business Heriot Watt made
off with the points recording a 5-2 victory. Those who were not
present that day missed out on a very entertaining game and one that
despite the scoreline could have gone either way. The University's big
Norwegian striker Lars Berger had a day to remember netting four goals
against a makeshift City defence.
The
good news for tomorrow's Image Printers Cup quarter final from a City
perspective is that both Michael Bruce and captain Ross Macnamara who
have missed the last four games return to the squad. On the flip side
Peter Stenhouse is still nursing his knee injury while Shaun Harrison
picked up an injury at training on Thursday and will also sit out
tomorrow's encounter. The winners of the tie will face a trip to
either Gretna 2008 or Craigroyston next month.

Derby
Fails to Excite City
failed to create much in the way of clear cut chances in yesterday's
derby match with local rivals Spartans. The visitors took an early
lead scoring from the penalty spot in the the opening minute after
Shaun Harrison had upended Dean Hoskins. Keith McLeod confidently
converted the penalty low to Duncan Monteith's left. Although City
enjoyed the bulk of possession it was Spartans who looked the more
threatening on the break and they extended their lead on 26 minutes
when McLeod rose unchallenged to head home a Manson cross from 12 yards
out. From there on in it was always going to be difficult for City to
find a way back into the game. The second half continued pretty much
along the same lines with City having the majority of the ball but
failing to penetrate a resolute Spartans defence who saw the game out
without too much trouble.

draw for the third round of the Active Nation Scottish Cup took place
at Hampden earlier today. City have been paired with Keith who currently sit sixth
in the Highland League. It's a draw that both teams will view as a good
opportunity to progress to the fourth round, the stage when the SPL
sides enter the competition. We have played a number of Highland
League sides in the competition in recent years although this will be

City
into Third Round
City
take their place in the third round draw of the Active Nation Scottish
Cup despite the best efforts of visitors Burntisland Shipyard at
Meadowbank this afternoon. Goals from Danny Denholm, Ian McFarland,
Steven Clee (2) and Kenny Ross were enough to see off the challenge
from the spirited Fifers.
Indeed
Shipyard were first to threaten as early as the third minute when a
speculative shot from nigh on the halfway line rebounded off the bar.
It wasn't long before City took the lead. A great run and cross from
Jordan Caddow was hammered home at the back post by Danny Denholm 10
minutes in. Caddow again provided the ammunition for the second, this
time Ian McFarland was on hand to fire in from 10 yards out. Steven
Clee seemingly put City on easy street blasting in after a fine
through ball from Gair. Two minutes later O'Hanlon scored a penalty
for Burntisland after Duncan Monteith brought down the on rushing
forward. The second half was a fairly poor affair, both sides failing
to pass the ball with any fluency. City rallied to score a
couple of late goals. In the 80th minute Clee headed home a Denholm
cross and full back Kenny Ross scored his first goal of the season
three minutes from time.

Burntisland
Scottish Cup Preview City
welcome Burntisland Shipyard AFC to the stadium tomorrow afternoon as
we look to prolong our cup run, and Shipyard hope to start one having
received a bye in the first round. Burntisland have had a mixed start
to the season and lie in a mid-table position in the Glendale Plastics
League. For the second weekend in a row the Fifers will cross the
Forth looking for cup glory. Last weekend they proved for long spells
of the game at Whitehill in the South Challenge Cup that they can
compete against East of Scotland opposition. Although they may have
lost that game 4-1, City coach John Green saw enough to suggest that
we will have to be on our game if we are to progress to the next
round. City
will look to continue where we left off in the first round at
Coldstream, but will have to do so without the services of injured
central defenders, Michael Bruce (groin strain) and captain Ross
Macnamara (knee) both look unlikely to make the starting line up.
Jamie Bain and Shaun Harrison returned to the fold last week in the
victory at Eyemouth and provide manager Shaun Steven with more options
in defence where we have been stretched at times of late.

Leith Athletic Preview
City
will play host to Leith Athletic for the first time since 1948
tomorrow afternoon, when the two sides meet in the first round of the
Image Printers Cup at Meadowbank. Although City lost the last home
encounter 5-0 back in 1948, they can take heart from their 2-1

Although
they ran out of puff towards the end of the last season Athletic made
a good start to the first half of their inaugural East of Scotland
League campaign and looked likely candidates promotion up until the
Christmas break, so City can be sure that they're not going to have an
easy 90 minutes.
Duncan Monteith has

Steven will have a full squad to choose from.
