Liam Henderson Leaves Edinburgh City FC

The Club can confirm that despite our best efforts, popular defender Liam Henderson has agreed to join Championship side Arbroath upon the expiry of his contract.

Having initially joined on loan in November 2017, Hendo made his deal a permanent one shortly after and aside from a brief adventure to the professional Australian league in 2018, he has been a mainstay of the Club’s progression over the last three seasons.

Arguably the most skilful and comfortable in possession of any defender in the division, Liam’s eye for goal has been fantastic, with a hattrick against Albion Rovers one particular highlight. Another was his streak of four goals in as many games back in December 2019 which saw him bag the SPFL League 2 player of the month award.

Boss Gary Naysmith paid tribute to Liam when he spoke to ECFC TV:

“I can confirm that Liam Henderson has decided to turn down our offer of a new contract and has instead decided to join Arbroath. Although I am disappointed with his decision, I can also fully understand it. It wasn’t about money for Liam but about testing himself at a higher level. This is something that Liam was very open about when we started negotiating with him. Although we are sad to see him go, we thank him for everything he has done for the club and wish him well at Arbroath.”

Echoing the Gaffer’s words, Liam had this to say on the news of his City exit:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Edinburgh City; the management and board have been first class with me since I first signed and it was a very tough decision to leave. I’ve had a terrific experience and played with a great bunch of players these last three seasons, it’s clear to me that the Club has progressed positively in every way possible in that time and I’m sure they will continue to do so given the current structures in place. The manager and the board made it very clear they wanted me to stay with the Club however my decision is based on an opportunity to test myself at Championship level which I hope they and most importantly the fans will understand. I wish the Club nothing but success in the future and wish everyone connected well.”

Good luck Hendo!
