Edinburgh City Sign New Forward Player

We are delighted to confirm the signing of former St Johnstone forward John Robertson.

Edinburgh-born, John played for Tynecastle at youth levels before signing for St Johnstone in 2017 and making seven Premiership appearances during his time in Perth. For the 2019/20 season he was loaned to Cove Rangers and featured against City in all three matches between the sides that campaign, with Cove declared League 2 champions following the Covid shutdown in March 2020.

Last season John was again on loan, this time to League 1 Forfar Athletic, where he made nine appearances in all competitions for The Loons.

Boss Gary Naysmith spoke to ECFCTV about securing another new forward option:

“John has been training with us over the last week or so and also played in our closed door game against Livingston, where he did very well and we are delighted that he has agreed a deal for next season to strengthen our striking options. John is a striker who can stretch the game with his runs inbehind but he can also come short and link the play. He has an eye for goal, has good pace and he will add something different to our attack. After lengthy discussions with John about how the last few seasons have been for him, both on and off the pitch, John now realises that he needs to get his head down, work hard and get his young career back on track and it’s great for us that he feels that Edinburgh City is the correct club for him to do so.”

The new front man had this to say when ECFC TV spoke to him:

“I’m delighted to have agreed a deal with Edinburgh City; it’s a club that has been challenging at the top of League 2 for the last few seasons and I’m looking to work hard and make sure we can be up there again this season. It’s an exciting time for the Club with the return to Meadowbank not far away, so I’m excited to be a part of it.”

John will go into our matchday squad for the opening match of our Cinch League 2 campaign at Albion Rovers tomorrow; good luck John!
