Edinburgh City vs East Kilbride

The East of Scotland City Cup was lifted with a 5-2 victory over Lowland League Champions East Kilbride at the John Brysdon Arena at the Oriam.

The early stages were extremely competetive, with slack play at the back by City punished by the East Kilbride forward. Almost immediately City went up the park and equalised when Alex Harris leveled from Callum Crane’s cut back. The match changed with an outrageous challenge from East Kilbride’s Darren O’ Dea after 18 minutes which saw the experienced defender shown a straight red. Despite this, Kilby went ahead again, Woods scoring from a freekick just outside the penalty area.

City began to get on top with the extra man and Scott Shepherd levelled just before halftime, turning in from close range. The second half was pretty much one-way traffic, with City making the numerical advatage count. Two quick fire goals from Jonny Court put the game to bed, before arguably the pass of the match from skipper Josh Walker was smashed home by Alex Harris to put a shine on the result.

Always good to record a high scoring win and put silverware in the cabinet, but there’s no denying the red card had a bearing on the match. The sides meet again in only a few weeks in the BetFred Cup, when it will surely be a tighter affair.

St Johnstone vs Edinburgh City

The squad’s pre-season preparations continued with a match against a youthful St Johnstone XI at the Oriam.

Alan Maybury’s youngsters gave a good account of themselves but the experience in the City squad is really starting to build and in truth it was a comfortable win. The goals both came in the first half, with Alex Harris rounding off a great move to open the scoring after 14 minutes and Jonny Court netting on the half hour mark after good work from Jordan Sinclair.

Positives all round and another good workout in testing conditions – ranging from stifling heat to monsoon rain!

Next up – we are back at the Oriam next Saturday to face East Kilbride in the final of the East of Scotland (City) Cup!

Edinburgh City FC vs St Mirren XI

Our pre-season preparations wrapped up tonight with a comfortable victory against a youthful St Mirren XI at the excellent new Oriam outdoor stadium 4G pitch. Both teams had the ball down playing good football but City always looked the more dangerous and took the lead early on through Graham Taylor. Midway through the first half Allan Smith doubled the advantage with a powerful drive from the edge of the box.

As is the way with pre-season games the second half saw a raft of changes, however City remained in the ascendency, man-of-the-match Graham Taylor was a constant threat with his pace and direct running. City struck the post twice, denying them what would have been two great goals, but ultimately the excercise was a success both in terms of fitness and the team continuing to come together as a unit.

The real work starts on Saturday as we travel to meet much-fancied Clyde at Broadwood in the BetFred Cup.
